Our Pleasant Plain branch played host to the girls and their parents as they were “sharks” in the proverbial “tank.”  They made items from recycled materials, then made a presentation to INB judges: Universal Banker Lacey Sorrill, Vice President Commercial Lending Becky Luzinski, and me.

After they gave their prepared presentation, we had the chance to ask questions about each project.  The girls, judged in two age groups – ages 6 to 9 and 10 to 13 – did such a nice job! They’d obviously worked hard on not only making the recycled items, but also preparing their presentations.

Some glued, some sewed.  Others painted.  In the end, we saw some pretty creative things including:

• Blue jeans turned into bags and filled with games like a jump rope, puzzle, and tic tac toe
• A market bag made of an old t-shirt and rope.
• Bows, headbands and bracelets made out of t-shirts
• A doggy bed made out of an end table turned upside down, painted white, then frilled up with a zebra print or hot pink pillow
• A mushroom table and chairs made out of old buckets painted white. Tall buckets were tables; short ones, chairs.  Over the buckets were old skillets turned upside down, then painted to look like a whimsical mushroom.
• Old cabinets turned into pet food holders.

Twelve scouts made presentations. The girls whatever it took to convince the judges they deserved to win, including using siblings to help model!  After their formal presentation, we asked questions like “How long did it take to make?  Did anyone help you? What will you sell it for?”  It was marvelous how they really owned their project and weren’t afraid to speak in front of us and the 15 – 20 parents who were also in the room.
