To help protect you from mail theft and financial fraud, the U.S. Department of the Treasury is making a big change.   Starting September 30, 2025, federal benefit payments will no longer be sent by paper check — except in rare cases. Instead, payments will be made electronically.

If you currently receive a paper check, it’s time to make the switch. And don’t worry — INB is here to make it easy.

US Treasury checkHow to Switch to Electronic Payments:

You have a few simple options:

  • Call INB at 877.771.2316 or visit your local INB branch – we’ll walk you through it.
  • Visit the Treasury Department’s Go Direct® website, www.godirect.gov.
  • Call the U.S. Treasury Electronic Payment Solution Center at (800) 333-1795 (Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST)

The Treasury will also be reaching out by mail to encourage recipients to make the change. You’ll be able to choose between:

  • Direct deposit (recommended if you have a bank account)
  • Direct Express® Debit Mastercard® (a secure option if you don’t have a bank account)

Why Go Electronic?

Here’s why switching to electronic payments is a smart move:

  • Get your money faster
Electronic payments are quicker and more reliable than paper checks. In fact, paper check recipients are 16 times more likely to experience issues than those using direct deposit.
  • Safer and more secure
No more lost or stolen checks. Your money goes straight into your account — no need to visit a branch or ATM.
  • No bank account? No problem.
The Direct Express® card is a secure, low-cost way to receive your benefits. No credit check, no monthly fees, and no overdraft fees. Just use it like a debit card for everyday purchases.
