Listening is one of the most powerful tools in banking.  Ruth Kombe listens very closely.  She then uses what she hears to creatively solve problems and support her customers and team members. Thanks to these characteristics shining through, she recently earned a promotion to Bloomington Assistant Branch Manager.

Since joining INB in 2020 as a teller, Ruth has built a reputation for her ability to connect with customers and offer solutions that meet their goals. Whether she’s answering questions, addressing concerns, or simply offering reassurance, Ruth takes the time to understand what matters most to each person she helps. No wonder she’s risen through our ranks from teller to banker to branch operations supervisor to, now, assistant branch manager.

Taking Time a Prerequisite to Listening

Ruth says, “I believe in really paying attention and listening closely to customers. Once I understand their needs, I can find solutions that not only address their current situation but also anticipate what they might need down the road.”

That mindset has made Ruth a go-to resource for Bloomington employees and customers alike. She recalls helping a couple who had just moved to the area and were unsure about switching banks. Ruth walked them through INB’s Mortgage Bundle Bonus and our easy enrollment tool.  She helped them transition smoothly — and confidently — to INB. “Now they stop by just to say hello,” she says.

Showing People They Matter

For Ruth, helping people feel seen and supported is what makes her work meaningful. She approaches coworkers the same way she approaches customer service: with kindness, empathy, and a desire to build trust. “I always try to be approachable,” she explains. “I want the team here to know they can come to me without judgment. We’ll figure any problem out together.”

Ruth’s boss, Branch Manager Andi Whalen, says that sense of ownership and care makes a big impact. “Ruth is a natural leader,” Andi shares. “She steps in when needed, leads by example, and brings positive energy into everything she does. I never have to worry when she’s here — she owns her responsibilities with confidence and precision.”

In just a short time in her new role, Ruth says: “One thing that really surprised me about banking is the sheer number of roles and teams working behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly. There’s an entire 'army' of people supporting the operations, many of whom I didn’t even realize existed until I took on more responsibility. It’s been eye-opening to see how each role, no matter how behind-the-scenes, contributes to the success of the organization.”

In her new role, Ruth is looking forward to more involvement in the Bloomington community. “One of my goals is to get out and build more relationships with local businesses,” she says. “It’s outside my comfort zone, but I know it’s important — and I’m excited to grow in this way.”

Outside of work, Ruth spends time with her husband and two daughters.  Any family time -- whether visiting local parks, planting tomatoes and jalapeños, or simply laughing together at home -- helps keep her grounded and energized, she says.  Ruth also plays an active role in her church.
