Illinois National Bank (INB) employees will hand out healthy snacks and easy meals to Kids Café participants beginning at about 2 p.m. Friday, March 27 at Brandon Court.
During the school year, Kids Café provides a warm, nutritious meal to nearly 100 children after school; however, the program closes during spring break which begins Monday. Six years ago, INB launched a drive to collect healthy snacks for about 150 Kids’ Café participants during their week-long break.
“When our employees learned the children served by Kids Café don’t know where their next meal will come from, they were worried because these kids could be at home for up to 10 days over spring break without meals being a sure thing,” said Pat Phalen, INB executive vice president. “So six years ago, our employees took it upon themselves to raise funds, buy food, and work with the Food Bank on distribution. This year, the entire community helped us by supporting our recent Shred Events. As of two weeks ago, we still needed to raise over $1,500. We collected almost $1,800 from our three shreds . . . all donations from generous community members,” continued Phalen. “While it was important to us to raise awareness about the need here in our community, the action our community took is beyond commendable. It’s just another example of the kindness of the people in central Illinois.”
Other fundraising activity included an INB employee peanut butter and jelly challenge and a 50/50 drawing. In addition to the purchased food, fresh fruit is being donated by Tom Lange Co., Inc. Toothbrushes and toothpaste will be provided by Central Counties Health Centers, Inc.
Sponsors of the Kids Café include the Central Illinois Foodbank, the Springfield Urban League and Springfield Housing Authority.
